Evaluation of anterior and posterior corneal aberrations after intracorneal ring segment implantation in patients with keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the anterior and posterior corneal aberrations after intracorneal ring segment implantation in patients with keratoconus.

Setting:

Medipol University Medical School, Turkey

Methods:

85 eyes of 52 patients with clinical keratoconus were included in this study. All eyes underwent intracorneal ring segment implantation after creation of corneal tunnels using femtosecond laser. All eyes were evaluated before and 6-months after surgery using Placido-Scheimpflug combined topo/tomographer. Visual acuity, keratometry, anterior, posterior and total corneal aberrations were analyzed.

Results:

The mean Ksteep was 48.6±4.8 D in keratoconus group, and 43.2±2.1 D in control group. The mean anterior corneal total higher order aberration, coma, and spherical aberration were 1.83±1.39 μm, 1.44±0.92 μm, 0.31±0.29 μm, respectively. The mean posterior corneal total higher order aberration, coma, and spherical aberration were 1.04±1.63 μm, 0.36±0.32 μm, 0.16±0.21 μm, respectively. After intracorneal ring implantation, the mean anterior corneal total higher order aberration, coma, and spherical aberration were 1.02±0.82 μm, 0.62±0.52 μm, 0.21±0.14 μm, respectively and the mean posterior corneal total higher order aberration, coma, and spherical aberration were 1.23±1.71 μm, 0.52±0.41 μm, 0.37±0.35 μm, respectively.

Conclusions:

Although anterior corneal aberrations significantly decrease, posterior corneal aberrations does not significantly or increase in some cases in eyes that underwent intracorneal ring segment implantation.
