Boston Type I keratoprosthesis surgery: a newcomer's experience

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcome and spectrum of complications of keratoprosthesis surgery in the initial cases of a new keratoprosthesis surgeon

Setting:

Tertiary Eye Care Centre

Methods:

Retrospective review of case-records of patients undergoing Boston Type I keratoprosthesis surgery following standard recommended surgical techniques

Results:

Keratoprosthesis surgery was performed in 6 cases. Main indication was corneal graft failure. Preoperative vision ranged from counting fingers to light perception. Mean follow-up was 10.4 months (range, 7-18). At the last follow-up, 5 eyes (83%) achieved visual acuity of 6/60 or better. Postoperative complications included retroprosthetic membrane formation (80%) and elevated intraocular pressure ( 66%).

Conclusions:

Boston Keratoprosthesis Type I variant is an excellent surgical option in corneal blindness with a poor prognosis for penetrating keratoplasty even in a beginner’s hands. Significant improvement of visual acuity achieved in majority of patients despite the occurence of amenable complications in the postoperative follow up
