The analysis of causes for keratoplasties at University Center of Ophthalmology and Oncology in Katowice, Poland from 2010 to 2014

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to review retrospectively causes of corneal transplantations performed in Department of Ophthalmology, University Center of Ophthalmology and Oncology in the past 4 years.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University Center of Ophthalmology and Oncology, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

During above mentioned years 687 keratoplasties were performed, 656 perforating keratoplasties (PKP) and 15 lamellar keratoplasties (9 anterior, 7 posterior) and 15 limbal stem cells keratoplasties.

Results:

The main causes of planned KP were keratoconus 138, postinflamatory scar 127, Fuchs endothelial dystrophy 39, bullous keratopathy in pseufophakic and phakic eyes 94, limbal stem cells deficiency due to chemical and thermal burns 15. The causes of hot keratoplasties were active bacterial, fungal and acanthamoebal keratitis 64, corneal perforation 51, due to corneal ulcer 42, posttraumatic 5, caused by autoimmune systemic diseases 4. Altogether re-keratoplasties were performed in 159 patients, 95 patients had KP 2 times, 32 three times, 15 four times, 10 five times, 6 six times and 1 patient had seven times. The youngest patient was 7-years-old and the oldest was 87-years-old.

Conclusions:

The main cause of KP was keratoconus. KP were mainy performed as planned procedures, however hot KP were characterized by high rate of rejection.
