Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of mechanical implantation of myoring in keratoconus patients with high myopia.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Bina Eye Hospital Research Center, Tehran, Iran

Methods:

This study comprised 32 eyes of 32 keratoconus patients (14 male , 18 female) with high myopia which had MyoRing (Dioptex GmbH) implantation using mechanical dissection with PocketMaker microkeratome and completed 3 months of follow-up. Preoperative and postoperative Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction and keratometry readings were the main outcome measures of the study.

Results:

The mean age was 30 ± 7 years (range 20- 44 years) .The mean preoperative UDVA(log MAR) increased significantly from 1.14 ± 0.32 to 0.35 ± 0.24 (P˂0.001) and the mean CDVA(log MAR) improved from 0.47 ± 0.20 to 0.22 ± 0.15 (P˂0.001) postoperatively. The mean sphere and cylinder of manifest refraction decreased significantly by 7.70 and 2.6 diopter (D) respectively (p< 0.001). Furthermore, in regard to corneal topography a significant reduction was observed in the mean keratometry (K) reading. The mean K reading decreased by 3.55 D (P˂0.001) at the end of follow-up.

Conclusions:

The outcomes of the study show that myoring is quite effective method in the correction of myopia in keratoconus patients with high myopia. The mean UDVA, CDVA, K reading, astigmatism and sphere improved during the three months postoperatively.
