Graft rejection and failure in endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and re-DSAEK in a two-year follow-up study

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the study was to compare the frequency of graft rejection and failure after Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and re-DSAEK.

Setting:

The eye clinic at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet, Glostrup, Denmark.

Methods:

All patients having DSAEK or re-DSAEK performed at our department in the period between July 1st 2012 and January 1st 2013 were included in this retrospective two-year follow-up study. Graft rejection episodes and failures during the two years of follow-up were recorded.

Results:

In total 66 patients (66 eyes) were transplanted and had available follow-up data after two years. A number of 53 patients had DSAEK performed and 13 patients re-DSAEK. During the time of follow-up 4/53 (7.5%) of the DSAEK-treated eyes and 5/13 (38.5%) of the re-DSAEK-treated eyes experienced failure (p-value less than 0.05, Fishers Exact test). Graft rejection occured in 5/53 (9.4%) of DSAEK-treated eyes and in 1/13 (7.7%) of re-DSAEK eyes (non-significant, Fishers Exact test).

Conclusions:

In this retrospective two-year follow-up study we describe a statistically significantly higher risk of graft failure in re-DSAEK compared to DSAEK. The rate of graft rejection was not significantly different in DSAEK and re-DSAEK.
