Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report clinical results and safety profiles of Kerarings, (Mediphacos, Belo Horizonte, Brazil), implantation in eyes with moderate to severe keratoconus.
Setting:
Royal Eye and Lasik center, Cairo, Egypt
Methods:
Interventional case series of 30 eyes from 20 patients implanted with Kerarings using the femtosecond laser. Evaluation included uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction, and Placido-based Scheimpflug imaging. Postoperative follow-up was 1 day, 1 week, and 1, 3, and 6 months.
Results:
This prospective study evaluated 30 eyes of 20 patients with a mean age of 27 years. The mean logMAR of UDVA was significantly better 6 months postoperatively than preoperatively (0.54 ± 0.15 versus 1.50 ± 0.23) (P<.001), as was the mean logMAR of CDVA (0.13 ± 0.07 versus 0.85 ± 0.16) (P<.001). The mean spherical equivalent refractive error was -5.43 ± 1.76 diopters (D) preoperatively and -2.42 ± 0.95 D at 6 months postoperatively (P<.001). The mean preoperative corneal astigmatism was, 7.21+/- 2.78 D and at 6 months postoperatively 2.99 ± 1.09 D (P<.001).
Conclusions:
Implantation of Kerarings for moderate to severe keratoconus is safe and effective, leading to significant decrease in myopia and appreciable decrease in astigmatism with improvement in CDVA.
