Abstract Details
Purpose:
Introduce a new surgical technique and a new technology to treat corneal ectasias.
Setting:
This study was conducted in Barranquilla , Colombia . Clinica Carriazo
Methods:
Annular keratectomy was performed in five eyes with Keratoconus. A pachymetry map was obtained and exported to the Pachymetry Assisted Laser Keratoplasty (PALK) software. A custom designed mask with a 0.5 mm wide and 8.00 mm in diameter annular aperture, was placed over the cornea, centered with the pupillary axis. The Excimer laser was used to perform a guided circular photo ablation of 8.0 mm, removing epithelium, Bowman layer and stroma, leaving 50 microns of posterior stroma. The cornea was then sutured border to border using 16 interrupted sutures with 10-0 nylon.
Results:
At 3 months postoperative UCVA improved from 20/400 to 20/80; BCVA: 20/80 to 20/50. The author will present 6 months follow up results in visual acuity, and topography changes.
Conclusions:
Annular keratectomy is an alternative surgical treatment in patients with Keratoconus.
