Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe a case series of patients treated with partial Tarsorrahaphy and Botulinum Toxin in VII, V cranial nerve lesions secondary to neurosurgery.
Setting:
12 de Octubre University Hospital, Complutense University, Madrid, Spain
Methods:
Four patients diagnosed with intractable corneal exposure secondary to facial nerve palsy after neurosurgical procedure received an injection of 10 U of BOTOX flacon® elevator palpebrae muscle . Then, medial partial tarsorrhaphy was performed with two points in U with silk 2/0 placed 1 mm below the lid root in the lower eyelid and 1 mm superior to that root in the upper eyelid are fixed on a silicone tube.
Results:
After 12 months of follow the ocular symptoms were satisfactorily treated and corneal reepithelializations were achieved and maintained postoperatively in all patients. However 1 patient had a several thinning and is waiting for a penetrating keratoplasty.
Conclusions:
We concluded than the combination of these techniques could be useful in patients with aggressive corneal exposure, especially after direct cranial nerve injury.
