Correlation between corneal involvement and anterior chamber flare in epidemic keratoconjunctivitis

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the correlation between corneal involvement and anterior chamber flare using laser flaremeter in eyes with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis.

Setting:

Ege University and Baskent University

Methods:

Thirty one eyes of 19 (17 female, 2 male) consecutive patients with epidemic keratoconjuctivitis were evaluated. Besides complete opthalmic examination, anterior chamber flare mesurements with laser flare meter (FM 600, Kowa) were performed. The effects of biomicroscopic findings (eyelid edema, conjunctival hyperemia, follicular reaction, punctate epiteliopathy and subepithelial deposits) on anterior chamber flare were assessed by Spearman correlation analysis.

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 37.42±19.87 (range, 4-70) years and the mean duration of complaints was 4.41±3.56 (range, 1-12) days. The biomicroscopic findings were conjunctival hyperemia in 31 (100%), follicular reaction in 24 (77.4%), eyelid edema in 15 (48.4%), punctate epiteliopathy in 11 (35.5%), and subepithelial deposits in 11 (35.3%) eyes . The mean flare value was 15.77±11.29 (range, 2-42.4) photons/ms. No significant relation was observed between eyelid edema, conjunctival hyperemia, follicular reaction, punctate epiteliopathy, and anterior chamber flare (p=0.242, p>0.05, p=0.335 and p=0.133, respectively). However, flare measurements were significantly higher in eyes with subepithelial deposits (r=0.562, p=0.001).

Conclusions:

Subepithelial deposits seems to induce anterior chamber inflammation in epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. Laser flaremeter might be a useful tool to predict subepithelial deposit development risk in these patients.
