Abstract Details

Purpose:

To explore the relationship between corneal thickness and mitral valve prolapse (MVP)

Setting:

Cardiology and Ophthalmology Departments in Etimesgut Military Hospital, Ankara, Turkey

Methods:

Echocardiography was consecutively performed following a corneal topographic and slit-lamp examination in patients with a diagnosis of keratoconus. Presence of MVP and the thickness of mitral valve anterior leaflet was evaluated with echocardiographic examination in patients with keratoconus and healthy subjects. Mean central corneal thickness (CCT) of right eye and left eye was compared among groups. Statistical analysis were done by Independent Samples t test using SPSS 15 for Windows.

Results:

Demographic features (age, weight and height) were not different among groups (p>0,05). Mean CCT was significantly lower in patients with keratoconus and MVP with regard to control subjects (p<0,05). Additionally mean CCT was significantly thicker in MVP patients with a MVT greater than 5 mm than in MVP patients with a MVT lower than 5 mm (p<0,05).

Conclusions:

MVP and keratoconus are probably the different representative scenes of a shared degenerative process of collagen and fibrillin due to various matrix metalloproteinases and cathepsins, etc. which were recently documented to be mainly accounted for such matrix degenerations.
