Elective keratopigmentation for changing the apparent colour of the eye: an innovative indication

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Reporting the one year follow up of the outcomes of 4 cases, that underwent Elective keratopigmentation for changing the colour of the eye.

Setting:

Vissum Corporation, Alicante, Spain Resbiomed/ VISSUM centre, Sofia, Bulgaria

Methods:

A prospective study consecutive nonrandomized interventional case series of patients who under went purely cosmetic keratopigmentation, to change the colour of the eye, using the 3 surgical methods described for this procedure; the superficial automated keratopigmentation (SAK), the manual intralamellar keratopigmentation (MIK) and the femtosecond assisted keratopigmentation (FAK), in this study we report both the cosmetic outcome, the patient satisfaction and the stability of pigmentation pattern and vision with or without the presence of any complications.

Results:

The study included 4 cases that for personal response chose to undergo purely cosmetic keratopigmentation, 50% of patients were females, with average age of 37.75 years ± 10.75. Two of the patients underwent bilateral keratopigmentation and the others under went unilateral keratopigmentation, in the 50% of the patients pigment retouch was done to improve the cosmetic out come, all of the patient expressed high satisfaction with the cosmetic outcomes, with no complications and stable visual acuity and refraction .

Conclusions:

As a novel indication, elective keratopigmentation for changing the colour of the eye is a reliable and more safe option for permanent eye colour change, with stable pigmentation and no visual disability in any of the patients, along with high satisfaction with outcomes in all of them.
