Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the relationship between the serologic markers and the severity of dry eye in primary Sjögren’s syndrome SS.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, South Korea.

Methods:

Sixth four patients diagnosed as primary SS according to the Sjögren’s International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) classification criteria at 2012 were included in this study. Serum anti-Ro/SSA, anti-La/SSB, Antinuclear antibody (ANA), and Rhematoid factor (RF) assays levels, and ocular parameters (Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Schirmer I test, tear film break up time (BUT), ocular surface gradings; cornea stain score, conjunctiva stain score, and ocular surface staining score (OSS)) were determined.

Results:

The patients with high anti-Ro antibodies showed significantly higher conjunctiva stain score and OSS compared with those with low anti-Ro antibodies. The patients with positive anti-La antibodies showed no differences in ocular surface staining gradings compared to those with negative anti-La antibodies. High positive RF patients showed a significantly higher conjunctiva stain score and OSS compared to either low positive or negative patients. High ANA titer group showed significantly higher cornea, conjunctiva stain score, and OSS compared to low titer group. All serologic markers did not correlate with OSDI, Schirmer I test value and BUT.

Conclusions:

As conjunctiva stain score and OSS significantly differ according to the serologic marker levels, serologic markers might contribute to the pathogenesis of conjunctiva in primary SS dry eyes.
