Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the efficacy of topical cyclosporine A (CyA) therapy in patients with dry eye syndrome (DES) associated with blepharitis.

Setting:

This study was conducted at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital between Januray 2014 and July 2014.

Methods:

Topical CyA 0.05% was given 2 times daily, in combination with artificial tears for 6 months, in addition to blepharitis treatment with steroid ointment, antibiotic ointment, oral doxycycline and warm compresses. The DES tests; Schirmer's test, tear break-up time (TBUT) and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores were recorded previously and 6 months after the treatment.

Results:

The study included 28 patients (56 eyes), with a mean age of 26 years (Range=18-47 years). Sixteen (57.1%) patients were men, while 12 (42.8%) were women. Mean Schirmer's test reading increased from 7 ± 2 mm/5 minutes at baseline to 13 ± 2 mm/5 minutes. Mean TBUT score increased from 8.6 ± 2.3 sec to 11.2 ±1.7 sec. Mean OSDI score decreased from 38.4 ± 17.4 to 23.2 ± 16.6. The DES tests statistically significantly improved after the treatment (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

Topical CyA 0.05% treatment is effective in treatment of DES in patients with blepharitis.
