Keratoconus in the Omani population

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the characteristics of keratoconus in Omani population.

Setting:

Keratoconus clinic in a tertiary care hospital(Al Nahdha hospital) at Muscat, Oman that serves the whole population of the Sultanate.

Methods:

A retrospective, chart-review study. A total of 389 consecutive keratoconus patients (232 males and 157 females) who attended the clinic between July 2013 and October 2014 were included in the study.

Results:

The mean age of the study group was 21 years with a male to female ratio of 1.5:1.Eighty two patients (22%) had a positive family history. Cases of keratoconus that were not previously diagnosed were detected by screening family members with up to 9 siblings in one family. 151 patients (39%) gave history of frequent eye rubbing. 146 patients (37.5%) had ocular allergy and 6 patients (1.5%) had cataracts. 16 patients (4.1%) had bronchial asthma and 7 patients (1.8%) had Down’s syndrome.

Conclusions:

Our study showed that a positive family history of keratoconus, and frequent eye rubbing are frequent findings in patients with keratoconus in Omani population. This signifies the importance of screening of young siblings to detect and treat keratoconus. Allergic eye disease is the most common ocular association followed by cataract. Bronchial asthma is the most common systemic association followed by Down’s syndrome.
