Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyse IOL implantation behavior and interaction with capsular bag and zonules during implantation of a three piece hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

The David J. Apple International Laboratory, Dept. of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

Methods:

The KOWA Avansee IOL is a 3 piece lens with a 6 mm optic made of hydrophobic acrylic material and c-loop haptics that consist of blue polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). In this laboratory analysis the Miyake-Apple-Techique was applied using a high speed camera. We analysed unfolding IOL properties in human autopsy eyes during implantation.

Results:

With the high speed camera up to 100.000 frames/sec can be recorded. We used a lower frequency of 5 to 10.000 frames/sec to analyse insertion of the IOL and the interaction between haptics, capsular bag and zonules during implantation of this preloaded intraocular lens. Due to the hydrophobic nature of the material the lens exits the cartridge in the anterior chamber controlled and in a slow manner. The haptic can be directed in the equatorial region of the capsular bag. Delivery of the second haptic can be done in a non traumatic way with the plunger inside the preloaded system.

Conclusions:

The implantation of the 3 piece hydrophobic intraocular lens by the preloaded system is a safe and non traumatic procedure.
