Abstract Details

Purpose:

Fundus examination is one of the important assessments before cataract surgery. However, in cases with severe opacity of transparent media, fundus is sometimes not able to be observed. This time, we could observe fundus preoperatively and assess surgical indication in a case with leukoma and cataract using Optos 200TxTM (Optos PLC).

Setting:

Tane Memorial Eye Hospital

Methods:

terygium, leukoma and cataract were seen in her left eye. Fundus was not able to be observed with indirect ophthalmosc A 76-year-old female complained of deterioration of visual acuity (VA) in her left eye during the last 6 months. She planned to have a cataract surgery. Decimal best corrected VA of her left eye was 0.3. ope. With ultra-widefield retinal imaging, Optos 200TxTM, fundus became able to be assessed preoperatively, and chandelier retroillumination-assisted cataract surgery was performed successfully.

Results:

ostoperative decimal best corrected VA improved to 0.5 in her left eye. Postoperative course was uneventful.

Conclusions:

Using ultra-widefield retinal imaging in a case with leukoma which hindered preoperative fundus examination, no abnormality in fundus was confirmed preoperatively, and cataract surgery was able to be performed safely. Preoperative fundus assessment using ultra-widefield retinal imaging was eligible for a cataract patient with opacity in transparent media.
