Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report our experience on safety and effectiveness of phacoemulsification in cataract with congenital lens and iris coloboma.

Setting:

Cukurova University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology, Adana-Turkey

Methods:

A 51 year old man with cataract and congenital iris-lens coloboma in both eyes referred to our clinic. The best visiual acuity was counting fingers at five meters for both eyes. Cataract surgery with using CTR and iris reconstruction was performed under peribulber anesthesia.

Results:

He did not develop corneal decompensation in both eyes within the follow-up period. The visual acuity was improved to 0.5 in both eyes. He did not experience glare or photophobia and he was satisfied with the cosmetic result of his pupils.

Conclusions:

Based on our experience, phacoemulsification with cosmetic repair of the coloboma can be a useful and safe procedure in cataract patients with congenital iris and lens coloboma.
