Abstract Details

Purpose:

Our aim is decided to study the incidence of nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) in patients with cataract and the percentage of patients who are not diagnosed with routine methods

Setting:

descriptive nonrandomized observational study in amiralmomenin hospital

Methods:

Study was performed as a descriptive nonrandomized longitudinal study. All patients who underwent cataract surgery enrolled in study. Irrigation test & Dye Disappearance Test (DDT) were done in all patients ,After complete eye examination and history taking, particularly the history of tearing of the eyes, data entered in the Data form. The data were analyzed using statistical software SPSS Ver16.

Results:

Of the 103 patients participating in the study, 52 patients were men and 51 were women. The mean age of participants' 70.53±9.79 years. Irrigation test diagnose NLDO in 19.4% (20) patients. Dye Disappearance Test (DDT) increase in %70 (14) of patients with NLDO vs normal in 73% of patient without NLDO (sensitivity=70%, specificity=73.4%). Only one patient with NLDO had pusy reflux. Conclusion:

Conclusions:

Considering the importance of preventing endophthalmitis, it seems that irrgiation before cataract surgery would be a definite way to reduce the risk of postoperative endophthalmitis, but the advantages and disadvantages of prophylactic irrgiation to open the duct requires more studies in this field.
