Femtosecond laser capsulotomy vs Verion image-guided manual capsulorhexis vs standard manual capsulorhexis

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the quantitative, qualitative visual outcome and IOL decentration values obtained after femtosecond laser assisted Capsulorhexis with those of Verion Image System guided manual CCC and standard manual CCC.

Setting:

Prospective randomized clinical study at Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital from June 2014 to November 2014.

Methods:

Candidates for cataract extraction were randomized into 1 of 3 groups as follows: Lensx femtosecond laser cataract surgery capsulotomy (Laser Group), Verion guided capsulorhexis (Verion Group), and standard manual Capsulorhexis (Manual Group). Post operatively at 7 days, 30 days and 180 days, the uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) Distance visual acuities, Spherical Equivalent (SE) were measured. IOL decentration and Modular transfer function test were measured with I trace Abberometer.

Results:

Each group comprised 40 eyes. The capsulotomies in Laser group and Verion group showed significantly better intraocular lens (IOL) centration than the manual group at all timepoints (p<0.05). Between groups differences in uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuitites were not statistically significant. The residual spherical equivalent were statistically smaller in the Laser and verion group than in the manual group and increased significantly over time in all groups. Modular Transfer Function test was statistically better at all spatial frequencies in the Laser and Verion group.

Conclusions:

Both Laser and Verion group produced better capsulotomy characteristic resulting in significantly better IOL centration and modular transfer function tests at all spatial frequencies with better refractive results immediately after surgery and overtime.
