Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report demographics and clinical findings of pediatric patients with traumatic cataract.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Uludag University, Turkey

Methods:

Records of the pediatric traumatic cataract patients, between January 2010 and December 2014 were reviewed retrospectively.

Results:

Sixty-seven pediatric patients (20 female, 47 male) were included in the study. Mean age was 8.4±4.6 years (range 1-18 years). Peak season for traumas were winter and summer. Eighty-five % were open globe injuries. Sixtyeight percent of the open globe injuries were corneal perforations. At initial examination, vision of 37 patients were below hand motion, the mean Snellen visual acuity of the rest was 12/200 . The most performed surgery for traumatic cataract was lens aspiration, anterior vitrectomy and IOL implantation. Mean final vision was found 80/200. The complications werephthisis bulbi, retinal detachment, corneal scar, endophthalmitis, keratitis, and glaucoma.

Conclusions:

Pediatric ocular traumas are among the serious reasons for pediatric blindness. Following open and closed globe injuries that lead to pediatrictraumatic cataract, a satisfactory visual outcome may be obtained with prompt cataract surgery and close follow up in tertiary centers.
