Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate the accuracy of the Aladdin (Topcon) optical biometer to calculate the intraocular lens (IOL) power in unoperated eyes.
Setting:
Bietti Foundation IRCCS, Rome, Italy
Methods:
IOL power was calculated by the Hoffer Q, Holladay 1 and SRK/T formulas. Predictions by each formula were optimized by adjusting the lens constant for each formula to achieve a mean prediction error (PE) of zero. The PE was calculated as the difference between the predicted refraction and refraction measured at one month postoperatively and was expressed as the Median Absolute Error (MedAE). Four IOL models (Alcon) were investigated: the monofocal nontoric Acrysof SN60WF, the monofocal toric Acrysof SN6ATX, the multifocal nontoric and toric +2.5 D Restor (SV25TX) and the multifocal nontoric and toric +3 D Restor (SN6AD1 and SND1TX).
Results:
Eighty-seven eyes of 87 patients were enrolled. According to the Hoffer Q, Holladay 1 and SRK/T formulas, the MedAE was respectively 0.26, 0.25 and 0.33 D with the SN60WF model (34 eyes), 0.30, 0.29 and 0.32 D with the SN6ATX model (16 eyes), 0.32, 0.26 and 0.26 D with the SV25TX model (19 eyes), and 0.31, 0.24 and 0.26 D with the SN6AD1/SND1TX model (18 eyes). With all formulas and all IOL models the rate of eyes within 0.50 D of predicted refraction was higher than 70%.
Conclusions:
IOL power calculation provided by the Aladdin results in accurate refractive outcomes.
