Anatomical and function changes after cataract surgery of contralateral eye

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the anatomical and function changes after clear cornea cataract surgery of contralateral eye

Setting:

Kyung Hee University Hosptial / Chung-Ang University Hospital

Methods:

The study group (23 eyes, age 69 ± 3.4 years, spherical equivalent within ±2.0 diopters) had phacoemulsification in one eye. Uncorrected and corrected visual acuity, photopic and scotopic pupil size, near point accommodation (NPA), near point convergence (NPC), depth of focus (DOF), contrast sensitivity, stereopsis, anterior chamber depth (ACD) were measured at preoperative and postoperative 1 month. Questionnaire for subjective symptoms was performed.

Results:

There was no significant change in uncorrected and corrected visual acuity, NPA, NPC, DOF, and contrast sensitivity at un-operated eye. Photopic and scotopic pupil size, and ACD of un-operated eye significantly enlarged after surgery. Stereopsis and contrast sensitivity under both eyes viewing improved. However, subjective symptoms of un-operated eye deteriorated.

Conclusions:

Visual function of un-operated eye did not change and rather improved under both eyes veiwing, however, subjective symptoms deteriorated. Phacoemulsification at only one eye can be helpful for patients objectively but subjectively unsatisfactory. This discrepancy should be explained to patients.
