Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual outcomes obtained with a new version of diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) featuring double C-loop haptic design.

Setting:

Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain.

Methods:

Sixty eyes of 30 patients who had bilateral implantation of the FineVision POD F IOL after cataract surgery were evaluated. The optic design of this IOL combines two superimposed diffractive profiles, resulting in a trifocal effect with an addition of +3.50 D and +1.75 D for near and intermediate vision, respectively. Monocular and binocular uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), monocular and binocular uncorrected (UNVA) and distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), binocular uncorrected and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA), the defocus curve, and binocular photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity with and without glare were evaluated over 6 months.

Results:

Mean refractive and visual acuity outcomes were stable during the postoperative follow-up period. Six months after surgery, the mean monocular UDVA and UNVA were comparable to preoperative CDVA and DCNVA, respectively. All patients achieved a binocular CDVA of 20/25 or better. The defocus curve showed a wide range of useful vision between distance and near foci, with visual acuity values of 0.2 logMAR or better corresponding to the intermediate focus. Photopic contrast sensitivity was better than under mesopic conditions, particularly at medium and high spatial frequencies.

Conclusions:

Bilateral implantation of the FineVision POD F IOL featuring double C-loop haptic design provides good refractive and visual outcomes at far, intermediate, and near distances, being stable during the follow-up period.
