Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate a new astigmatism marking system that places the corneal marks for proper toric IOL placement to enhance the surgical results of premium IOL surgery and limbal relaxing incision (LRI) surgery.

Setting:

cross-sectional study / GATA, İstanbul, Turkey

Methods:

The instrument is inserted into the socket on the support point of the illumination rotation arm of the slit-lamp and corneal marking of desired axis performed on visual axis. A straight line passing through the center of the corneal light reflex was drawn. Another straight line was drawn in the middle of the edges of the corneal marks. After marking procedures were done, a high-resolution anterior segment camera was used to document the corneal markings. The images of each cornea were assessed using an image analysis and processing software program.

Results:

The system has been used in 25 eyes and all marking points were clearly identified. Assessment of digital photographs showed consistent alignment on the intended axis passing on the center of the corneal light reflex that represents visual axis.

Conclusions:

This one-step slit lamp attached marking system marks the desired axis and aligns visual axis simultaneously and minimizes some possible measurement errors with three-step marking procedures. Measurement is simple that any person can perform it easily. The entire cornea and conjunctiva is visible and marking procedure can be controlled perfectly. Another optional part of the system enables the surgeon to mark the cornea for limbal relaxing incision for astigmatism correction.
