Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the efficacy of two techniques to stain anterior capsule using tryphan blue dye- one using a few drops of dye injected under airbubble with 30G needle & second using cannula under air bubble through the side port.
Setting:
Dr Om Parkash Eye Institute, Amritsar, India.
Methods:
In this study patients with white cataracts in the age range 40 to 80 years were randomised in 2 groups.
In one group ( 50 eyes ) anterior capsule was stained with a few drops of trypan blue dye introduced with 30 G needle through peripheral cornea under airbubble.
In other group( 50 eyes ) under air staining of anterior capsule was done by using trypan blue dye introduced through sideport with 26 G cannula.
Assessment of Intensity of staining & uniformity of staining was observed. Capsular manageability, post operative corneal edema, Anterior chamber inflammation, visual acuity & IOP was seen.
Results:
Comparative analysis of both groups data shows that method of staining with few drops of trypan blue with 30G needle was more effective in staining the anterior capsule. This method provided good staining and good intraop stability of air bubble while staining. This method prevents air bubble from escaping and allows fast uniform staining of anterior capsule.
There was no statistical significant difference in visual acuity, corneal edema,IOP & anterior chamber inflammation.
Conclusions:
The staining of the anterior capsule using Trypan blue under air with a 30G needle allowed enhanced stability of anterior chamber. Further, it involved use of smaller quantity of dye and adequate staining as compared to standard procedure.
