The effect of Venturi pump on outcomes of microcoaxial torsional phacoemulsification

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaulated the effect of the venturi pump (vacuum mode) on intraoperative performance and postoperative outcomes after microcoaxial torsional phacoemulsification.
Setting:
Kayseri Training and Research Hospital Eye Clinic, Kayseri, Turkey.
Methods:
Cataracts were treated with either a peristaltic(flow) or venturi (vacuum) pump using 2.2 mm microcoaxial torsional phacoemulsification. Intraoperative measurements analyzed included total ultrasound (US) time, torsional US time, cumulative dissipated energy (CDE) in torsional phacoemulsification. The central endothelial cell density (ECD) and the central corneal thickness (CCT) were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 and 30 days after surgery using noncontact specular microscopy.
Results:
The study enrolled a total of 84 eyes (84 patients); 42 eyes in the peristaltic group and 42 eyes in venturi group. Equal numbers of eyes were allocated to the phaco pump groups for each nucleus density grade. Intraoperative measurements showed significantly decreased total US time, torsional US time, and CDE in the venturi group, compared to the peristaltic group in torsional group (P<.05). However there were no differences in ECD and CCT between pump groups in torsional phacoemulsification (P>.05).
Conclusions:
Torsional phacoemulsification performed with a venturi pump provided more effective lens removal with a less total US time, torsional US time, and CDE compared with peristaltic pump.
