Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate an astigmatism marking device that enables the surgeon to mark the steep axis of astigmatism on the visual axis in one step in operating room just prior to surgery.
Setting:
Prospective cross-sectional study / Ondokuz Mayıs University, Samsun, Turkey
Methods:
The marker was used to mark the steep meridian of the corneas of 80 eyes. The slit lamp has a scale that is represented by dots and numbers separated by 5 degrees that correspond to the angle of the slitlamp beam. After marking procedure with new device, the narrow beam of the slit lamp is turned and adjusted to the desired steep astigmatic meridian corresponding t o marking procedure. A photograph was taken to image the cornea, slitlamp beam and the markings. Measurements with the slitlamp beam method were compared with measurements of the new device.
Results:
All of the corneal marking points were clear to identify. The astigmatic angles measured by the new device and by the slitlamp beam method showed a significantly direct relationship. Regression analysis showed a slope of 0.9818 and the R2 value of 0.9968 which means that the results are significantly related. The mean difference between meridians measured by each method was less than 1,1 degree.
Conclusions:
The results showed that the axis measurement with new device provides a simple, precise and efficient marking of desired axis. The device also has some superiority over the other marking devices.
