Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the Incidence of YAG capsulotomy after Hydrophilic Rayner and Hydrophobic AcrySof single piece acrylic intra ocular Lens implantation in a large retrospective Cohort analysis.

Setting:

WAPDA Teaching Hospital Complex 210 Feroz Por Road Lahore Pakistan

Methods:

This is a retrospective comparative cohort study. A total of 510 eyes of cataract patients who were implanted with either foldable PC IOL between Jan 2009 and December 2013 were included. Pre-operative, operative, and post-operative clinical data was collected. The best corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA) 6/12 or less, and clarity of posterior capsule with normal ocular examination otherwise, were the factors used to make a decision about. YAG capsulotomy.

Results:

In our cohort, 291 eyes were implanted with Hydrophilic Rayner single piece acrylic intra ocular Lenses and Hydrophobic AcrySof single piece acrylic intra ocular Lenses was implanted in 219 eyes. Follow up range was 12-60 months. YAG capsulotomy was performed in 20 eye (7%) in case of Rayner and 09 eyes (4.0%) in AcrySof group. Average post op duration between surgery and application of YAG was 17 months in Rayner and 35 months in case of AcrySof group.

Conclusions:

Hydrophobic single piece AcrySof IOL performed better in terms of incidence of YAG capsulotomy and the duration the YAG was performed after phaco surgery. It appears that incidence of PCO is related to the lens material as well along with square edge design of both the groups.
