Abstract Details
Purpose:
To review the various forms of clinically practiced ocular anaesthesia, and to evaluate the pros and cons of each mode.
Setting:
Arunodaya Deseret Eye Hospital (ADEH)

A total of 500 ocular surgery cases were retrospectively reviewed for:
(1) Type of Anaesthesia
(2) Anaesthetist's Remarks
(3) Evaluation of form of Ocular Anaesthesia with the proceedure performed
(4) Analysis of available data, in the series
Results:
Our study shows that Cataract Surgery was the most frequently performed proceedure ( Phaco // SICS), across all age groups, and sex.
The current prefered anaesthesia ( except in paediatric and unco-operative patients)is TOPICAL Anaesthesia, using 2% or 4% Topical preservative free Xylocaine.
Conclusions:
The type of Anaesthesia will depend on the proceedure, age of patient, surgeons choice and comfort levels.
Topical form of Ocular Anaesthesia is the most prefered, and likely to be so, for times to come.
