Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual performance of 136 patients that were implanted with a small-aperture corneal inlay in a newly created lamellar pocket

Setting:

Shine & Bright clinic, Seoul, South Korea

Methods:

Patients underwent small-aperture corneal inlay implantation into a lamellar pocket created with a femtosecond laser in the non-dominant eye. 53 of the 136 implanted eyes were virgin eyes. The remaining 83 eyes were implanted following a planned thin-flap LASIK procedure. Uncorrected distance and near visual acuities (UDVA & UNVA) were measured in the inlay eye. Mean ± standard deviation are reported in logMAR. Outcomes data is currently available at day 1 (n=112), week 1 (n=115), month 1 (n=106), month 3 (n=89), month 6 (n=52) and month 12 (n=17)

Results:

UDVA was 0.57 ± 0.72 preoperatively, 0.22 ± 0.24 at day 1, 0.08 ± 0.18 at week 1, 0.06 ± 0.16 at month 1, 0.03 ± 0.12 at month 3, 0.04 ± 0.09 at month 6 and 0.01 ± 0.08 at month 12. UNVA was 0.43 ± 0.32 preoperatively, 0.31 ± 0.19 at day 1, 0.19± 0.15 at week 1, 0.14 ± 0.11 at month 1, 0.12 ± 0.11 at month 3, 0.10 ± 0.09 at month 6 and 0.09 ± 0.12 at month 12. UDVA and UNVA were significantly different pre and post operatively (p < 0.05)

Conclusions:

Small-aperture inlay implantation in a lamellar pocket with or without prior planned LASIK significantly improves uncorrected near visual acuity without significant effect to distance visual acuity. Near visual acuities improve by month 1 and remain stable thereafter
