Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case with corneal opacity following KAMRA inlay implantation.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Hiroshima University

Methods:

A 63 year-old man who has received bilateral LASIK for myopia with KAMRA inlay implantation in his left eye about 3 years ago presented to his eye doctor with visual disturbance, double vision and uncomfortable feeling in dim light. Then, he has referred to our hospital. The best-corrected visual acuity reduced only in his left eye.

Results:

Slit-lamp microscopy revealed planate opacity around the inlay in stroma with iron line along with incision for LASIK flap. Corneal tomographic and topographic analysis with anterior segment OCT (CASIA) revealed stromal opacity around Inlay and an increase of astigmatic value in corneal surface. In vivo confocal microscopy with Heidelberg Retina Tomograph III-Rostock Cornea Module (HRTIII-RCM) revealed that activation of keratocytes and fibrosis in the stroma adjacent to the inlay inserted at a depth of 235µm. However, there were no inflammatory cell infiltration in epithelium and endothelium.

Conclusions:

Corneal inlay may have an influence on keratocytes and it has the potential to develop corneal opacity and topographic change.
