Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the comparability of corneal astigmatism measurements in patients undergoing cataract surgery obtained with the new automated keratometer ‘VERIONTM Reference Unit' to commonly used keratometers.

Setting:

Retrospective comparative study, University Eye Clinic Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Methods:

The right eyes of 42 subjects with pre-existing astigmatism undergoing cataract surgery were enrolled. Preoperative keratometry measurements were obtained using the following 3 devices: IOLMaster (automated keratometry), VERIONTM Reference Unit (automated keratometry), and Pentacam (Scheimpflug imaging). Individual astigmatism and meridian (degrees) values were transformed into Cartesian coordinates (x and y). Vector analysis was used to determine the comparability between the VERIONTM Reference Unit and the commonly used devices. Mean corneal astigmatism vectors were compared by one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Magnitudes of mean differences in corneal astigmatism measurements between devices were assessed using Pillai's Trace multivariate ANOVA.

Results:

The mean corneal astigmatism vectors measured by the VERIONTM Reference Unit (1.01 ± 1.95 D @ 90 degrees), IOLMaster (1.07 ± 2.01 @ 91 degrees), and Pentacam (1.09 ± 1.81 @ 93 degrees) were comparable (p>0.05). Mean differences in K values did not differ between the VERIONTM Reference Unit and the other devices (IOLMaster: 0.08 ± 0.31 D, p>0.05; Pentacam: 0.13 ± 0.44 D, p>0.05).

Conclusions:

This study compared the VERIONTM Reference Unit to commonly used keratometers. Vector analysis showed reliable and comparable corneal astigmatism measurements between the VERIONTM Reference Unit, IOLMaster and Pentacam. This provides proof that the VERIONTM Reference Unit is a valid alternative for preoperative keratometry in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
