Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate the impact on the intraoperative wavefront analysis by different factors: Drying cornea, unfolded IOL, hypotony or consequences of anethesia

Setting:

David J. Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology & International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Dept. of Ophthalmology, Univ. of Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

This study was performed with the assistance of the intraoperative aberrometer I-O-W-A (Eyesight&Vision, Germany). A multitude of influences was tested on the intraoperative measurement of refraction. These influences include the change of refraction of a drying cornea, the intraoperative pseudophakic measurement on partially unfolded IOLs and the effect of hypotony on the refractive power of the cornea. Also, we observed a dependency on the type of anaesthesia, probably due to its impact on the patients' compliance to align on the visual axis.

Results:

In total, 100 eyes are included. We found a rapid decrease in the corneal refractive power upon the drying cornea, as for the hypotonic eye. Intraoperative pseudophakic aberrometry clearly depends on the potential of an IOL to unfold quickly. A fundamental influence is the patients' capability to angle the visual axis on the aberrometer precisely, which heavily depends on the type of anaesthesia.

Conclusions:

The intraoperative wavefront technology provides exciting new means to verify the predicted surgical outcome. We identify and illustrate fundamental prerequisites on an intraoperative measurement to deliver a trustworthy result.
