Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe pachymetric measurements on different spots of the cornea, their evolution with age and differences by sex and laterality

Setting:

International Center of Advanced Ophthalmology, Madrid, Spain. University of Extremadura. Departament of Ophthamology.

Methods:

Cross-sectional study of 878 patients (329 men and 549 women) without ocular diseases or previous surgeries. A corneal topography was made with Pentacam. Paquimetric measurements and their evolution with age were studied in the following points: Mínimum thickness point (PaqMin), corneal apex (PaqApex), 3mm above (PaquiSup), below (PaqInf), nasal (PaqNas) and temporal (PaqTemp) the pupil center. PaqMin location and displacement from de apex was also analyzed. For quadrant evaluation, pachymetry of 4 zones located in the superonasal, superotemporal, inferotemporal and inferonasal quadrants were studied. Each zone was calculated as the mean pachymetry of 4 different points into each quadrant.

Results:

1643 eyes were studied; 821 right eyes (OD) and 822 left eyes (OS). PaqMin was located in the inferotemporal quadrant in the 83,9% OD and 89,1% OS of the eyes (mean displacement from apex of 676microns OD and 666microns OS). Correlations (rho) found with age, although statistically significant (SS), were very weak. Women corneas were found to be slightly thinner than men (SS) (differences for PaqApex: 7,84microns, PaqMin: 7,42microns, PaqInf: 6,45microns, PaqNas: 4,51microns and PaqTemp. 5,83microns). Superonasal zones of both eyes had the thicker pachymetries. They also show the highest, but again weak, negative correlation with age (OD:-0.251 y OS:-0.261).

Conclusions:

Mean pachymetry measurements studied barely varies with age (weak correlations when SS). Women corneas were found to be slightly thinner than men (SS), more pronounced in central points than peripheral. Minimum thickness point is located in the inferotemporal quadrant more frequently. The opposite quadrant (superonasal) shows the thickest pachymetry, but also decreases more its thickness with age (high negative correlation).
