Abstract Details

Purpose:

To asses the suprathreshold visual performance combining two new methodologies: on one side, a measure of sensitivity to suprathreshold contrast changes in a set of natural image, on the other side, by the analysis of the eye movements patterns while reading

Setting:

University of Valencia, Spain

Methods:

We use an infrared webcam to develope a low cost video video recording systems of the eye reading movements. Later, an own Matlab script performs the eyetracking of the sequence to get the saccades movements and heat maps, in order to determine patterns of reading. The measurement of contrast changes sensitivity is measured by varying the RMS contrast of octave bands of spatial frequencies in a set of natural images, The subject has to detect when the test image is different than the reference image

Results:

The results for both tests are consistent with those found in the literature and show the convenience of using new methodologies to asses the visual performance. The pattern of eye movements while reading provide a new way of analyzing this task. The results that were obtained are in agreement with previous results for the contrast sensitivity function at suprathreshold conditions found in the literature. This two tests are a quick and simple option suitable in clinical settings

Conclusions:

We propose two different metrics to assess the performance of the visual system in normal viewing conditions rather than the classic threshold conditions. Thus, we obtain information about the performance for specific supreathreshold tasks thet can improve the evaluation of presbyopic correction evolution and refractive surgery procedures
