Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the outcomes of Collagen copolymer toric phakic intraocular lens in high hyperopia and compound hyperopic astigmatism.

Setting:

Dunya Eye Hospital , Istanbul, Turkey.

Methods:

The study enrolled 13 eyes ( 7 patients) with high hyperopia and compound hyperopic astigmatism , which had implantation of Collagen copolymer toric phakic intraocular lens (pIOL)(Staar Surgical Company, California). In all eyes, anterior chamber depth (ACD) was higher than 3.00 mm. Preoperative hyperopia was between 5.50 and 11.50 D (mean 6.81D), astigmatism was between 0.50 and 2.75D (mean 1.43 D). Main outcome measures were UCVA, BCVA , manifest refraction, anterior chamber depth (ACD), axial length (AL), adverse effects, intraoperative and postoperative complications and intraocular pressure(IOP) evaluation. All operations were done by the same surgeon.

Results:

After the pIOL implantation, the mean decimal UCVA was significantly improved from 0.26 to 0.78 (P=0001) . The postoperative UCVA of 11 eyes (84.6%) was equal to preoperative BCVA. Postoperative UCVA of 2 eyes (15.4%) gained 1 line of preoperative BCVA. No eye lost a line of BCVA. Baseline manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) changed from 6.81 D (+/-1.57) to 0.53 D (+/-0.28) postoperatively. The mean refractive cylinder changed from 1.43 D (+/-0.73) to 0.36 D (+/-0.09) postoperatively. No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred. The mean follow up time was 20.15 months (8-35 months).

Conclusions:

Toric pIOL implantation is an effective, predictable and safe treatment in correction of high hyperopia and compound hyperopic astigmatism. Longer term studies are required for further evaluation and comparison with other methods.
