Abstract Details

Purpose:

to study the safety and predictability of the 2-step approach

Setting:

Kahhal medical complex/ Dammam university

Methods:

120 consecutive eyes of 66 keratoconus patients, with minimum three months follow-up time, were enrolled in this study. Those who are aged ˃ 33 years (naturally cross-linked) received T-ICL. In the other hand those showing active progression of keratoconus or aged ≤ 33 underwent CXL followed by T-ICL implantation.

Results:

42 eyes (35 %) gained 1-2 lines from their best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BCSVA), 71 eyes (59 %) achieved their BCSVA and 7 eyes (6 %) lost 1-2 lines due to some residual refraction. Using the “visual analogue scale” to measure the patient satisfaction, out of 58 patients, 49 (84.5 %) patients were very satisfied, 7 (12 %) patients were satisfied and 2 (3.5 %) patients were not satisfied.

Conclusions:

the 2-step approach seems to be save and predictable way in managing most cases of keratoconus
