Effects of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract pretreatment on pupil diameter: a comparison between three laser platforms

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess pupil diameter before and after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) pretreatment and compare the outcomes of three laser platforms.

Setting:

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida, USA

Methods:

This prospective study included consecutive patients scheduled to undergo cataract extraction using FLACS between August 2013 and February 2015. All eyes received FLACS pretreatment using three laser platforms: Group 1; LenSx, Group 2; Catalys and Group 3; Victus. The same protocol for preoperative medical mydriasis was used for all patients, while pupil diameter was assessed immediately before and three minutes after FLACS.

Results:

A total of 198 eyes of 161 patients were included in the study, 68 male and 93 female aged 69.58 ± 10.18 years (range, from 38 to 92 years). Mean pupil miosis was 1.42 ± 1.26 mm (range, from 0 to 4.5 mm), 0.66 ± 0.89 mm (range, from 0 to 5 mm) and 0.14 ± 0.34 mm (range, from 0 to 1 mm), for groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Furthermore, 16 out of the 198 eyes (8.1%) demonstrated pupil diameter ≤ 5 mm after FLACS; while, 42 eyes (21.21%) demonstrated pupil diameter ≤ 6 mm. There was a statistical significant decrease (comparison of pre- and post- FLACS) in pupil diameter for all groups individually (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

FLACS pretreatment seems to induce significant pupil miosis by all the laser platforms assessed in this study. The decrease in pupil diameter after FLACS reached the clinical significant zone (≤ 5 mm) in 8.1% of cases.
