Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present etiologies, management, and visual outcomes of pediatric cataract.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital, Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic

Methods:

Patients were divided into two groups according to the etiology of the cataract: congenital, infantile or juvenile cataract (A) and traumatic cataract (B). There were 26 children in group A (13 girls and 13 boys). Eleven children had unilateral cataract (11 eyes) and 15 had bilateral cataract (30 eyes). The mean age at surgery was 43 months (range 1-132 months). Group B comprised of 18 children (6 girls and 12 boys) with unilateral injuries. The reason for cataract was penetrating injury in 12 eyes and blunt injury in 6 eyes. The mean age at diagnosis was 7 years (range 3-14 years).

Results:

All surgeries were performed by experienced surgeon in general anesthesia and were followed by visual rehabilitation and amblyopia treatment.Best corrected visual acuity was 0.4 and better in 60 % eyes in the group A and in 50% eyes in the group B. The most common postoperative complications were visual axis reopacification, posterior synechias and increased intraocular pressure.

Conclusions:

Pediatric cataract remains a challenge despite of all improvements. The management plan must involve an interdisciplinary team approach. None of the authors has a financial or proprietary interest in any product mentioned.
