Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the depth of the stromal demarcation line after standard, high and very high intensity corneal cross-linking (CXL) using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Setting:

Vardinoyiannion Eye Institute of Crete (VEIC), Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete

Methods:

In this prospective, comparative case series, 60 eyes of 50 keratoconic patients underwent CXL treatment using the same ultraviolet-A (UVA) irradiation device. Twenty eyes were treated for 30 minutes with 3 mW/cm2 of UVA irradiation (Group 1), 20 eyes were treated for 10 minutes with 9 mW/cm2 of UVA irradiation (Group 2) and 20 eyes were treated for 5 minutes with 18 mW/cm2 of UVA irradiation (Group 3). Corneal stromal demarcation line depth was measured in all eyes using AS-OCT, one month postoperatively.

Results:

Mean corneal stromal demarcation line depth was 338.05 ± 50.65 μm (242-409 μm) in Group 1, 281.45 ± 29.80 μm (229-353 μm) in Group 2 and 225.37 ± 31.11 μm (159-265 μm) in Group 3. The corneal stromal demarcation line was significantly deeper in Group 1 than in Group 2 (p < 0.001) and Group 3 (p < 0.001).

Conclusions:

Corneal stromal demarcation line was significantly deeper after 30-minute (standard) CXL treatment than after 10-minute (high intensity) and 5-minute (very high intensity) CXL procedures.
