Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the 2 years results of accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in the managment of progressive keratoconus.

Setting:

Beyoglu Eye Research and Training Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

77 eyes of 77 patients were included in this retrospective study. All patients underwent accelerated CXL at an irradience of 30 mW/cm2 for 4 minutes (total surface dose 7.2 J/cm2). Topografic findings ( K flat, K steep, K apex, K average and thinnest corneal thickness (TCT)) were evaluated at baseline and follow-up visits during 2 years.

Results:

Mean ± SD age of 29 female and 48 male was 20.11± 6.27 years. K flat value decreased from baseline by 46.16 ± 2.73 D to 45.88 ± 2.70 D at last visit, and the K steep value decreased from 50.32 ± 3.95 D to 49.92 ± 3.83 D (P<0.05 for both) K average value decreased from 48.08 ± 3.15 D to 47.80 ± 3.07 D and the K apex decreased from baseline by 56.65 ± 5.05 D to 55.62 ± 4.78 D at last visit (P<0.05 for both) The TCT was 464.16 ± 23.82 μm preoperatively while it was 471.15 ± 25.16 μm at 24 months postoperatively. (P<0.05)

Conclusions:

Accelerated CXL (30 mW/cm2) was found effective at stabilization of progressive keratoconus without any side effects during 24 months follow up.
