Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the changes in Scheimpflug imaging parameters in progressive and no progressive keratoconus at 1 year of follow-up.

Setting:

Oftalmosalud Instituto de Ojos, Peru

Methods:

This prospective study included 79 eyes with keratoconus diagnosis without any treatment between July 2013 and February 2015. Eyes were grouped in progressive KC and no progressive KC. Progression was define as increase in corneal curvature of more than 1 Diopter (D) and loss of more than 2 lines of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) in 1 year. Visual acuity, refraction and Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam) was performed and compare between the 2 groups at baseline and 1 year of follow up. Maximum posterior elevation (PEmax), maximum keratometry (Kmax), asphericity (Q), pachymetry at the thinnest point (PTP), and others was measured.

Results:

At baseline mean uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) was 0.63 and 0.54 LogMAR, Kmax 52.84 and 49.10D, PTP 480.88 and 509.98um, PEmax 42.37 and 30.92um in the progressive and non-progressive group respectively. The mean change in Kmax at 1 year in the progressive group was +1.88D and 0.2D in the no-progressive group (p<. 001). The mean change in the PTP was 2.92um and 1.40 um in the no progressive and progressive group respectively (p=0.65). The mean change in the posterior elevation at the TP was 19.23 um and -4.77 um in the no progressive and progressive group respectively (p<. 0001).

Conclusions:

Progressive keratoconus showed higher keratometry, posterior elevation values and inferior pachymetry compared with the non-progressive group. Changes in keratometry and posterior elevation at 1 year showed statistical difference between progressive and no progressive group.
