Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual outcomes and complications profile of primary Non sutured (Scharioth technique )scleral-fixated intraocular lens (SFIOL) with primary anterior chamber intraocular lens (ACIOL) implantation in aphakia without capsular support.

Setting:

Divyadrishti Eye Centre, Patna, India

Methods:

Retrospective, interventional, comparative cases series Retrospective analysis of medical records of a consecutive series of aphakia treated with primary SFIOL or ACIOLimplantation at the end of 1 year of follow up..Thirty-six eyes of 30 patients undergoing SFIOL implantation (group A) and 30 eyes of 30 patients undergoing ACIOL implantation (group B).Outcome measured were postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and corneal decompensation,Cystoid macular edema and IOL stability.

Results:

Best corrected visual acuity of more 20/40 was achieved in 24 patients of Group A (SFIOL) and 25 patients of Group B (ACIOL). In group A 1 patients needed refixation of IOL due to decentration. In group B (ACIOL), 2 patients developed CME and 2 developed corneal decompensation. In group A CME or decompensation was not noted but significant deposits on IOL was noted in 12 patients.

Conclusions:

Non-sutured SFIOL (Scharioth technique) is emerging as a treatment of aphakia without capsular support. In ACIOL, conreal decompensation is one of the main concern which is not seen in cases of SFIOL. SFIOL is better option as compared to ACIOL.
