Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present two cases of early PCIOL dislocation following uncomplicated cataract surgery.

Setting:

Leicester Royal Infirmary, UK.

Methods:

Retrospective case series and literature review looking for causes and risk factors for PCIOL dislocation and surgical management techniques.

Results:

Two patients that had routine phacoemulsification and PCIOL implantation were observed to develop early PCIOL dislocation. Surgical manoeuvres to reposition the IOL inside the bag were carried out, with a satisfactory visual outcome achieved in both cases. We discuss the risk factors for PCIOL dislocation and propose preventative strategies to reduce the incidence of PCIOL dislocation.

Conclusions:

Phacoemulsification is a successful technique for treatment of cataracts. We have identified several risk factors for the development of PCIOL dislocation, including patient related and surgical related factors. The risk of PCIOL dislocation can be reduced by adopting a safe surgical technique and being aware of this kind of complications.
