Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the learning curve of phacoemulsification of residents in ophthalmic microsurgical training and compare results with international data published.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Szeged, Hungary

Methods:

Retrospective overview of medical records focusing on number of cases, rate and type of complications, change in overall duration of surgery and final visual outcome for the patient.

Results:

A total of 163 surgeries of 3 residents were analyzed. The rate of complications was found to be between 8-12% (9.2%) and included 11 (6.75% ) posterior capsule ruptures, 4 (2.45%) anterior capsule ruptures, 2 (1.23%) cases of dropped nucleus, and 1 (0.61%) late onset endophthalmitis. Average time of surgery decreased form 33.3 to 27.3 minutes in the time period observed. Visual acuity of patients improved from an average of 0.34 to 0.88 decimals with no case of significant visual loss.

Conclusions:

Our results correspond with international data published. The rate of complications at the beginning of the learning curve tends to be higher, still patients received good care with surgery being safe. The role of the mentor in determining future success is essential.
