Purpose:
Comparison of the visual outcomes in a controlled trial in patients with cataract surgery, bilaterally implanted with two trifocal toric IOLs or two trifocal IOLs.
Setting:
IOA Madrid Innova Ocular, Madrid, Spain.
Methods:
This controlled trial compares 26 patients implanted with a trifocal toric IOL, with a group of 26 patients implanted with a trifocal non-toric IOL. Visual performance is determined in terms of monocular and binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity, distance corrected visual acuity at far (4m), intermediate (63 cm) and near (40 cm), in photopic and mesopic conditions (respectively 10 and 500 lux). Photic phenomena is first analysed with a glare test and secondly with a questionnaire, a straylight measurement (OQAS) and contrast sensitivity measurements. The postoperative refraction will be assessed and processed using Alpins method.
Results:
No statistical difference was seen in the uncorrected visual acuity at any distance. It was better than 0.3 in all cases. For both IOLs, the defocus curve showed a continuum in the visual acuity, greater in average to 0.2 LogMAR. They both showed similar contrast sensitivity with a drop for the high contrasts in mesopic conditions. The trifocal toric succeed in reducing the astigmatism to less than 0.5D. The glare test showed no difference between groups. All patients except one were satisfied. The one was expecting better near vision
Conclusions:
Adding a cylinder to a trifocal IOL is not detrimental and enables to provide spectacle independence to patients having an astigmatic cornea.
