Purpose:
To evaluate the visual outcomes after KAMRA corneal inlay (Acufocus, Inc., Irvine, CA) implantation in both phakic and pseudophakic patients.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Saarland University Medical Center, Homburg, Germany.
Experimental Ophthalmology, Saarland University, Homburg, Germany.
Methods:
Twenty patients between 47 and 63 years old were divided into two groups: Group 1 (13 phakic patients) and Group 2 (7 pseudophakic patients). Group 1 underwent simultaneous LASIK and KAMRA corneal inlay implantation in the nondominant eye of hyperopic and emmetropic presbyopic patients. Group 2 underwent cataract surgey or refractive lens exchange with monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and 6 weeks later KAMRA corneal inlay implantation in the nondominant eye. The monocular uncorrected distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA), near visual acuities (UNVA), and a subjective patient questionnaire on satisfaction were compared pre- and postoperative between the 2 groups.
Results:
All twenty patients were available for the 6-month postoperative examination. Both groups achieved a mean UDVA of 20/20, with Group 1 and Group 2 gaining 3 lines and 6 lines respectively. The mean UIVA in Group 1 was J2 with 8 lines gained and in Group 2 was J1 with 8 lines gained. The mean UNVA was J2 with 6 lines gained in Group 1 and J1 with 7 lines gained in Group 2. Twelve patients (92%) in Group 1 and 7 patients (100%) in Group 2 reported being very satisfied.
Conclusions:
Implantation of the KAMRA corneal inlay improved monocular uncorrected near, intermediate and distance visual acuities in both groups. Although the outcomes were comparable between the groups, Group 2 had the highest patient satisfaction. The KAMRA corneal inlay seems to be an effective and safe method for presbyopia correction in both phakic and pseudophakic eyes.
