Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study an influence of parameters of pseudophakic eye on the phenomenon of light reflection from the IOL surface (PLR) in natural conditions in experiment.
Setting:
Penza Federal State Institute for Postgraduate Medical Studies of the Ministry of Health, Penza, Russia
Methods:
PLR in pseudophakic eyes was simulated by specially designed experimental test rig. The rig consists of perimeter, video camera replacing an observer and light source with possibility of changing of angle to the fixation point of test subject. The degree of PLR manifestation was expressed as the angle at which it was observed. Studies were performed on 20 eyes of 18 patients with acrylic IOLs, including open-bag IOLs. An influence of IOL-iris distance and pupil diameter on the PLR manifestation degree was studied. IOL-iris distance was determined by ultrasound biomicroscopy measuring, and the width of the pupil dosed by medication.
Results:
Direct relationship of degree of the PLR from the IOL surface with the pupil diameter and inverse relationship with IOL position in the eye, specifically with its distance from the iris, were obtained in experiment. The dependence of the width of the angle of PLR manifestation on the values of IOL distance from iris in different pupil diameters was established. In the case of open-bag IOL PLR was not observed in all cases.
Conclusions:
The proposed test rig allows to simulate and study in natural conditions effect of PLR from different models of IOL by different materials considering the variety of individual parameters of pseudophakic eyes. Method of PLR preventing, improving the cosmetic effect of intraocular correction and comprising an increase the distance from the surface of the IOL to the iris was proposed and experimentally proved.
