Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the theoretical aspects of the phenomenon of light reflection (PLR) from the IOL surface and its dependence on the parameters of pseudophakic eye.
Setting:
Penza Federal State Institute for Postgraduate Medical Studies of the Ministry of Health, Penza, Russia
Methods:
The phenomenon of light reflection from the IOL surface in pseudophakic eye was studied by mathematical modeling based on the laws of geometrical optics. Parameters of an eye, affecting the degree of manifestation of this phenomenon, were determined. The degree of manifestation of the PLR from the IOL surface is expressed as the angle at which the phenomenon was observed.
Results:
Direct relationship of degree of the PLR from the IOL surface with the pupil diameter and inverse relationship with IOL position in the eye, specifically with its distance from the iris, were mathematically proved. The dependence of the width of the angle at which PLR manifests on IOL-iris distance at different pupil diameters was established.
Conclusions:
It has been shown that the deeper IOL position in the eye and the smaller pupil diameter may reduce the phenomenon of light reflection from the IOL surface in pseudophakic eye. Advisability of increasing the IOL distance from the iris as a method of prevention of the PLR from the IOL surface was mathematically proved.
