Abstract Details
Purpose:
To test correlations between tridimensional (3D) optical densitometry and wavefront aberrations (HOAs) in patients with mild nuclear cataract.
Setting:
Cornea and Refractive Surgery Department, Hospital de Braga, Braga, Portugal.
Methods:
Forty-one eyes of 30 patients with nuclear cataract were included in this study. All patients had complete ophthalmic examination, including preoperative LOCS III grading after pupil dilation. 3D densitometry measurements were provided by Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam HR, Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany). Visual function analyzer (i-Trace, Tracey Technologies, Houston, Texas, USA) that combines ray-tracing aberrometry and Placido-disk based topography evaluated the total and internal wavefront aberrations.
Results:
The mean Average Density was 8.988 +/- 0.758 (range 7.5 to 10.8). The mean Maximum Density was 27.960 +/- 6.971 (range 16.9 to 56.1). Significant positive correlations were found between the 3D densitometry parameters and the total and internal aberrations, including coma and trefoil. Internal Spherical Aberration presented negative correlation with the Average Densitometry and Maximum Densitometry (r = -0.398, p = 0.010; r = -0.412, p = 0.008, respectively).
Conclusions:
There is a significant correlation between the lens scattering defined by 3D optical densitometry from Scheimpflug imaging and ocular aberrations measured by ray-tracing.
